How to Get around in Pella

From Don Logan

Good Morning Sir!!

A couple of things

Two thoughts….    If ladies get “bored” by all the testosterone and tall tales. There is a very nice Winery directly between Pella and Oskaloosa that has a rich variety of wines, and a fine tasting room!

It is one of the bigger and better ones in Iowa   Tassel Ridge Winery

One “topic” we might throw out there is there gets to be interests is “lineage”   My Pledge father was Knight Wells-not sure who his was.  I had one pledge son…Keith Schmidt…   I think it might be interesting to see linkages   If the topic comes up!!!

The attached map should be helpful to folks who haven’t been here in a few years.  Zooming in on the map will clearly show the hotel as well as some other relevant sites.  (My talented wife inserted the details on this map.)  I assume you will forward this to everyone.  If anyone has additional questions about the area have them send an email to me (dav3491@lisco.com)

If arriving by plane at the Des Moines airport:  Fleur Drive runs north and south in front of the airport.  Go south then take Hwy. 5 east.  In a few miles, Hwy. 5 is joined by hwy. 65 and then 5 splits off going to Carlisle.  Stay on hwy. 65 until you get to hwy. 163.  Go east on 163 all the way to Pella.  If your first objective is to check in at the HI Express take exit 40 on the west side of Pella.  Go west then south toward the dam and then back east on Bos Landen Drive.

As I mentioned earlier, the Holiday Inn Express is located right in the middle of a very nice golf course.  Follow this link to see details about the course. www.boslanden.com

Pella now has the tallest working windmill in North America.  On this website, click on the dropdown menu below the “visit” tab for windmill information and a lot more information about the historical village and museums.  www.pellahistorical.org

Red Rock Dam is being retrofitted with a hydroelectric generating station.    Two huge holes (big enough to drive a truck through) were dug through the dam right alongside the existing concrete structure.  There are lots of pictures of this major project on the following website.  Completion is expected later this year.        www.redrockhydroproject.com

Some alumni know that the Vermeer Mfg. plant on the east side of Pella was hit by a tornado last year.  If you do a search on “Vermeer tornado 2018” it will bring up tv stories including video of the devastation that occurred.  I think there were 3000 or so people on the site when it hit and there were only a handful of minor injuries due the emergency procedures that had everyone in shelters in the factory buildings. Two buildings were severely damaged.

The dirt racetrack in Knoxville is well known to folks who follow this type of racing.

They have a nice museum with information on this website.  www.sprintcarHOF.com
